The Challenge:
Creating a Modern Space That Brings Students Together
Mountwest Community and Technical College wanted to reimagine an underutilized area of campus into a vibrant hub for students. The goal was to design a space that could flex between solo study, group collaboration, and informal hangouts—supporting both academic and social needs in one centralized location. They needed furniture solutions that were durable, adaptable, and inviting to students throughout the day.
The Solution:
A Flexible, Student-Centered Commons
Franklin collaborated with ZMM Architects and Engineers and Swope Construction to bring the Digital Commons to life. Outfitted with Steelcase furniture, the space features a mix of open lounge areas and enclosed meeting rooms—each tailored to support different modes of student engagement. Whether tackling group projects or decompressing between classes, students now have access to a dynamic, inclusive space that reflects the college’s forward-thinking vision.
The Impact:
Supporting Learning, Connection, and Campus Life
The Digital Commons has quickly become a go-to destination for students across campus. By blending comfort, functionality, and flexibility, Mountwest has created an environment that fosters collaboration, builds community, and enhances the overall student experience. Franklin’s design and furniture expertise helped turn a blank canvas into a space where students want to be—no matter how they choose to learn or connect.
