The Challenge:
Creating Passenger Spaces that Handle Volume and Feel Like Pittsburgh
As a major transportation hub and first impression for visitors to the region, Pittsburgh International Airport needed to do more than accommodate travelers. It needed to reflect the optimism, growth, and renewed identity of the city itself.
The terminal modernization introduced a wide range of high-traffic public environments, from arrivals and departures to TSA checkpoints, multimodal connections, and outdoor gathering areas. Each space required furniture solutions that could withstand constant use, support passenger comfort, and align with Gensler’s design vision, while also navigating evolving schedules and phased construction across an active airport.
With volume, logistics, and public visibility at stake, the project demanded a furniture partner capable of coordinating complex installations without disrupting airport operations.

The Solution:
Strategic Furniture Planning Across a Complex, Phased Environment
Franklin partnered with the project team and Gensler to support furniture planning and execution across the terminal. The team hosted Gensler and airport stakeholders in Franklin’s showroom for a finish meeting and coordinated sample reviews across multiple product options to help confirm materials, comfort, and durability.
Franklin provided design support, project management, and installation for furniture in key passenger-facing areas, including:

As project needs evolved, Franklin adjusted delivery and installation plans multiple times and supported added scope for additional airport areas, keeping execution aligned to the broader terminal schedule.
The Impact:
A Welcoming, Forward-Looking Gateway to Pittsburgh
The modernized Pittsburgh International Airport has been widely celebrated, drawing positive public attention and reinforcing the airport’s role as a civic landmark. Travelers now experience spaces that feel intentional, comfortable, and reflective of the region’s forward-thinking identity.
Through careful coordination and furniture solutions designed for high-volume public use, Franklin helped bring Gensler’s vision to life across one of the city’s most visible destinations. The result is an airport environment that supports ease of movement, moments of pause, and a strong sense of place, setting the tone for Pittsburgh from the moment passengers arrive.
