The Challenge:
Transforming a 1931-Era Science Building into a Modern STEM Hub
Grove City College began a $50 million renovation and expansion of its oldest academic building, Rockwell Hall, with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art hub for science, technology, engineering, and entrepreneurship. The project aimed to connect the reimagined space, which would be rededicated as the Smith Hall of Science and Technology, to the adjacent STEM Hall. Together, these buildings would form a unified environment for collaborative research and learning. The challenge was to preserve the historic character of the building while introducing flexible, modern spaces that could adapt to evolving academic programs and cutting-edge research needs.
The Solution:
Modern Spaces that Inspire Collaboration
Franklin partnered with Grove City College, The Smith Group, and Landau to furnish and finish the renovated facility with solutions that support active learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and faculty-student partnerships. The project included:
- Active Learning Classrooms and Labs – Outfitted with Steelcase furniture to support varied teaching styles and group configurations.
- Collaboration Zones – Integrated soft seating, movable tables, and open work areas to foster informal interaction.
- Conference Rooms and Private Offices – Designed for focus, mentoring, and team discussions.
The Impact:
A Connected, Future-Ready STEM Destination for Students
The Smith Hall of Science and Technology now offers 66,500 square feet of innovative, flexible space, which is a 22 percent increase over the original facility. The building’s design supports evolving STEM programs, promotes cross-disciplinary work, and preserves key historic features such as the stained-glass tower windows and the iconic Foucault pendulum. Students benefit from modernized labs, adaptable workspaces, and collaboration areas that prepare them for careers in science, technology, and entrepreneurship. By blending historic charm with forward-looking design, Franklin helped Grove City College create a STEM hub that will serve generations of students and faculty.
